Operating photovoltaic installations safely and efficiently

Electrical safety and safety standards for PV installations represent a particular challenge for the operator Like every complex technical installation, a PV installation can also produce hazards. In addition, due to its nature a PV installation places high requirements on the system safety technology with its large voltage fluctuations. The often physically extensive PV installations are also subject to a heterogeneous range of climatic conditions such as UV radiation, heat, frost, moisture, salt and other environmental eff ects, e.g. rodent damage. As a consequence far-reaching safety standards apply to PV installations. This article addresses the requirements from the standards and how they can be implemented.

Verificación inicial y revisión de sistemas IT

The insulation resistance is particularly important for the prevention of damage and injury, and for the reliability of electrical systems and equipment. On the one hand it is basis for the protection of individuals and systems, on the other hand it also serves as an important indicator for the condition of an electrical installation. Depending on the life cycle of a system or an item of equipment, the insulation resistance is to be tested, to be measured or also to be monitored.

Fachartikel: Elektrische Sicherheit für Gleichstromsysteme (DC-Systeme)

Low voltage DC systems (LV DC systems) play an important role in an ever increasing number of applications. The increasing importance of renewable energies is one of the reasons. Photovoltaic installations generate DC that can be stored in decentral battery installations. In addition there are a large number of loads that can be operated in an energy efficient manner with DC, such as electric vehicles and railway rolling stock or lighting installations. The DIN VDE 0100 series of standards is also definitive here for the electrical safety in the DC installation, however the specific requirements for DC systems must be observed.

A safe trip all the time – with reliable power supply

The failure of navigation and drives fail may raise considerable problems concerning the operation of the ship. But this is not the only reason why safe electric power supply on modern ships plays a major role. Power supply systems of different safety relevance and different voltages require a differentiated distribution and supply concept including the respective monitoring devices in order to prevent unexpected operational interruptions and possible hazards in a comprehensive way.

The new dimension in insulation monitoring

The general view of the electrical supply is mostly simply that "electricity comes out of the wall socket". This easy to understand, but very superficial statement, also reflects a lack of concern among the population about electrical safety. The specialist world has been treading new ground in the areas of power generation, power distribution, safety and the related applications for decades. For this reason, the related standards are continuously revised, new standards written and scientific findings implemented, for example on protection against electric shock.

Essay: Charging Elec tric Vehicles - Protection against Electric Shock by DC Fault Current Sensor Units

In electromobility subjects a mutual exchange of information and the necessary knowledge transfer between power suppliers and vehicle developers are essential and the results are implemented into the standards. Protection against electric shock, for example, is particularly important in charging electric vehicles.

Essay: Insulation Monitoring in High Voltage Systems for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

As a consequence of recent developments in electric drives in vehicle manufacture there are new aspects to be addressed in the protection of individuals and systems. The battery voltages used at DC 120 V to DC 1000 V are way beyond protective extra low voltage...
